The year is uncertain but it's probably a 1986
model. It has 130mm spacing and will be built up with six-speed
gear. This thing needs a lot of love as it was not in great
cosmetic shape by any means. It's being worked on slowly trying
to buff out the worst of the offenses to the aluminum. There is
some chain suck but not too serious. The finish is probably too
far gone to get a really nice polish out of it so this bike will be a
brushed finish. Actually, the brushed finish is the nicest so it's
hardly a last resort choice. Still, it's going to take a lot of
time to get it right. Some parts, like the seat aren't taking a
lot of work, the downtube is a different matter. Well, some day
it will be done.
You can see from the pictures that the welds
aren't quite as high quality as some of their later work but they are
nice enough. The one picture of the bike next to the couch is how
the bike looked when it arrived. The first reaction to it was,
"Hmmmm....this is going to take some time." Oh well, it's no
hurry to get it together. I did pick up an American stem for it.
It was anodized black and it was the intention to remove the
anodization and brush the stem. However, after seeing it, the
decision was made to leave it as is since the stem is in near perfect
condition. Just leave it alone. Well, there you go, an
early American Comp-Lite.
